Teachers at IFS Toronto ratify their FIRST agreement as Union members

After a difficult round of negotiations, the 28 teachers working at the Islamic Foundation School of Toronto ratified their very first collective agreement as Union members on November 2, 2017. The committee achieved significant language recognizing the teachers as permanent employees of the school.

Another 22 teachers have joined UFCW Local 175!

On June 15, 2017, another 22 teachers – this time at the Islamic School of Hamilton – voted to join our Local Union.
“These new members had a lot of the same concerns as the teachers at the first two Islamic schools we organized,” said UFCW Local 175 Organizer Farman Ali. “They want to achieve respect on the job, policies that apply to each employee equally, and have formal lunch breaks.” Other concerns included job security, benefits, having a pension, and wage improvements.
The all-female staff of full and part-time teachers join 64 other teachers at two similar private schools in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) who voted to join the Union in May.

Like their colleagues in Scarborough, the teachers at the Islamic Foundation School in Toronto have voted to join UFCW Local 175.
The 22 full-time teachers employed at the private school are looking for job security that they currently do not have with the contract system they presently work under. The workers are also seeking better benefits and compensation for the important work they do.
The Union is seeking meeting dates with the employer to begin the process of bargaining the first collective agreement for these workers.

Teachers at Scarborough Islamic Foundation School vote to join the Union
Teachers at the Islamic Foundation School in Scarborough voted overwhelmingly to join the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 175 on May 1.
The Union believes this to be the first Islamic school to unionize in Canada.
“The teachers at this school are dedicated to the children in their classrooms,” said UFCW Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty. “Joining the Union means that they can better their workplace so they can continue to give back to their community.”
A range of issues brought the 42 full-time teachers employed at the private school to seek Union representation including a lack of respect in the workplace, time limits on vacations, poor job security, and an inadequate compensation package.
The Union is seeking meeting dates with the employer to begin the process of bargaining the first collective agreement for the workers.
